CA woman gets life for murder of millionaire lover

(AP) ? A Southern California woman was sentenced to life in prison Friday for helping her lover, former NFL linebacker Eric Naposki, murder her live-in millionaire boyfriend for financial gain nearly two decades ago.

Nanette Ann Packard, 46, was convicted of murder earlier this year in the cold case slaying of William Francis McLaughlin, who made his fortune in medical technologies and was shot dead in his kitchen in December 1994.

Packard was living with the much older McLaughlin when he was murdered, but the divorced mother of two was also dating Naposki, a former linebacker for the New England Patriots and Indianapolis Colts who worked as a bouncer at a nearby nightclub.

Packard convinced Naposki to kill McLaughlin, gave him a key to the victim's house and told him when he would be home, prosecutors said.

She stood to collect $1 million on a life insurance policy and receive $150,000 and free rent for a year at one of his homes if McLaughlin died, authorities said.

Packard ended up stealing at least $500,000 from McLaughlin's estate both before and after his death, Matt Murphy, deputy district attorney, said during trial.

She pleaded guilty to grand theft in 1996 and was sentenced to a year in jail, but the murder case went cold.

Investigators long suspected Packard and Naposki, however, and new technology to identify the weapon along with a new witness allowed prosecutors to file murder charges in 2009, prosecutors have said.

McLaughlin's adult daughters spoke at the sentencing hearing Friday in Orange County Superior Court.

"The fact that you, Nanette, destroyed so many lives, including my Dad's, is vile. ... You had absolutely no right to take him from us for your own selfish reasons. He was incredibly good to you for four whole years," said daughter Kim McLaughlin Bayless.

Naposki, 45, was convicted of first-degree murder last July.

His sentencing has been postponed until Aug. 10.

'Zombie Swipeout' goes ninja on the undead

4 hrs.

Don't get me wrong, I love me some "Fruit Ninja." But there have been times when I've longed to slash my way through something a little more menacing than a flying?banana.

Zynga, it seems, understands my need for a little gore. The company has just unveiled its?newest game ? one that?will toss the undead across our iDevice screens, daring us to cut them down if we can.

Developed by the folks?who brought us the iPhone hit "ZombieSmash!," "Zombie?Swipeout" replaces the fiendish fruit with, as the name suggests, zombies ... and plenty of blood.

Earlier this week, I?had a chance to talk with?Matthias Hoechsmann, the?director of Zynga Mobile Germany who?developed the zombie-flicking?tower defense hit?"ZombieSmash!" with his brother. He?gave me an advance look at his?latest?offering. It has already been released in Canada and is?expected to arrive in Apple's?U.S. App Store shortly in both?a free version (with ads) and a 99-cent ad-free?version.

"With 'ZombieSmash!' there were so many different ways to kill zombies, but one thing didn?t make it into the game ? and that was slicing zombies," he explained. "We toyed with the technique in 'ZombieSmash!' but it was one of those things left on the cutting room floor. When we sat down to come up with our next game, we decided we could make an entirely new game out of this mechanic alone."

In "Zombie Swipeout," the object of the game is to slash, slice, bludgeon, explode?and freeze as many zombies as possible with one simple rule: don?t kill the good guy. And fans of "ZombieSmash!" will recognize that good?guy. His name is Joey and he's the lone?survivor from that game.

Of course, the comparisons to the famed "Fruit Ninja" are inescapable. But Hoechsmann says, "Our goal was to take the core mechanic of swiping on a phone, and move the category of slash games forward."

With that in mind, "Zombie?Swipeout" puts an?emphasis on?social with?a weekly tournament where players compete against friends for the highest score. Meanwhile, an RPG-style leveling system has been layered into the game in which players can unlock power-ups such as grenades and liquid nitrogen as well as a variety of different weapons???machetes, baseball bats, etc. And each weapon comes with different score-enhancing?perks.

There's also a coin-collection system that allows you to unlock weapons and juice up your energy.

"It's?a game that?s simple on the surface, but ?includes layers of complexity only realized after you continue to play," Hoechsmann says.

Here, check out the trailer ... but watch out for the blood splatter:

Documents shed new light, raise more questions in Trayvon Martin case

ORLANDO, Fla. (AP) ? Trayvon Martin's autopsy shows he had marijuana in his system the night he was killed by neighborhood watch volunteer George Zimmerman, and a gunshot to his chest came from close range, according to nearly 200 pages of previously undisclosed documents released Thursday.

At least one investigator wanted to charge Zimmerman with manslaughter but was overruled, according to the documents, which are shedding new light on a case that has raised questions about racial profiling and "stand your ground" laws. The investigator, who was on the scene after the shooting, wrote on March 13 that the confrontation should have been avoided. That report came nearly a month before Zimmerman was arrested.

The documents, photos and video were turned over by prosecutors to defense attorneys earlier this week before they were released to the media. Included in the many witness interviews were accounts by an acquaintance of Zimmerman's who said he's racist and a co-worker who said Zimmerman bullied him and mocked him with an exaggerated Middle Eastern accent.

The autopsy says medical examiners found THC, the psychoactive ingredient in marijuana, when they tested Martin's blood and urine. A police report shows the 17-year-old had been shot once in the chest and had been pronounced dead at the scene. The autopsy says the fatal shot was fired from no more than 18 inches away.

Also in the package is a photo showing Zimmerman with a bloody nose on the night of the fight. A paramedic report says Zimmerman had a 1-inch laceration on his head and forehead abrasion.

"Bleeding tenderness to his nose, and a small laceration to the back of his head. All injuries have minor bleeding," paramedic Michael Brandy wrote about Zimmerman's injuries in the report.

Whether Zimmerman was injured in the Feb. 26 altercation with Martin has been a key question. The 28-year-old Zimmerman has claimed self-defense and said he only fired because the unarmed teenager attacked him.

Zimmerman was not arrested for weeks because he invoked the Florida's law that does not require a person to retreat in the face of a serious threat. He was released on bail and is in hiding while he awaits trial on a second-degree murder charge. He has pleaded not guilty.

The investigator who called for Zimmerman's arrest, Christopher Serino, told prosecutors in March that the fight could have been avoided if Zimmerman had remained in his vehicle and awaited the arrival of law enforcement. He said Zimmerman, after leaving his vehicle, could have identified himself to Martin as a concerned citizen and talked to him instead of confronting him.

He said there is no evidence Martin was involved in any criminal activity.

The lawyer for Martin's parents seized on the investigator's recommendation.

"The police concluded that none of this would have happened if George Zimmerman hadn't gotten out of his car," said attorney Ben Crump. "If George Zimmerman hadn't gotten out of his car, they say it was completely avoidable. That is the headline."

A separate report written by Serino at the crime scene says Martin had $40.15, Skittles candy, a red lighter, headphones and a photo pin in his pocket. A single 9mm shell casing was found near Martin's body.

New witness accounts also emerged Thursday. A witness, whose name is redacted, told investigators he saw "a black male, wearing a dark colored hoodie," on top of a white or Hispanic male who was yelling for help.

The witness, who was looking out the sliding glass door at his home about 30 feet away, said he saw the black male throwing punches "MMA (mixed martial arts) style."

He said he told the fighters he was calling the police. He said that as he was making the call, he heard a shot. He looked outside and saw the person who had been on top laid out on the grass as if he had been shot. He said the other fighter was standing on the sidewalk, talking to another person with a flashlight.

The case has become a national racial flashpoint because the Martin family and supporters contend Zimmerman singled Martin out because he was black.

Two acquaintances paint an unflattering picture of Zimmerman in police interviews.

A distraught woman tells an investigator that she stays away from Zimmerman because he's racist and because of things he's done to her in the past, but she didn't elaborate on what happened between them.

"I don't at all know who this kid was or anything else. But I know George, and I know that he does not like black people. He would start something. He's very confrontational. It's in his blood. We'll just say that," the unidentified woman says in an audio recording.

A man whose name was deleted from the audio told investigators that he worked with Zimmerman in 2008 for a few months. It wasn't clear which company it was.

The man, who described his heritage as "Middle Eastern," said that when he first started many employees didn't like him. Zimmerman seized on this, the employee said, and bullied him.

Zimmerman wanted to "get in" with the clique at work so he exaggerated a Middle Eastern accent when talking about the employee, the man said. The employee told investigators that Zimmerman made reference to terrorists and bombings when talking about him.

"It was so immature," said the employee, who ended up writing a letter to management about Zimmerman.

Google Search basically reads your mind now

6 hrs.

Sometimes the queries you enter into Google have multiple meanings. Searching?"bears" could mean you want to learn more about the animals or the football team???or perhaps?something else entirely, something far less common. Wouldn't it be nice if Google could simply?guess?what you really want results for?

It now can.

Thanks to what's called Knowledge Graph, Google Search results will now include a little sidebar which allows you to choose from the various meanings of the term you searched for.

For example, if you search for "Andromeda," Google will suggest that you might be looking for information about a galaxy, a?TV show?or a Swedish heavy?metal band. You select which thing you want results about and Google will show you only those?links.

That's not all that Knowledge Graph will offer though. When there aren't multiple meanings for a popular?search term, it will ?provide a summary of relevant information related to your query in the sidebar.

Searching for an artist would bring up his most famous works. A musician query could?show her upcoming concert dates. Search for a TV show, and you might see information about its cast.

Clever, no?

You'll see Knowledge Graph in search results about as often as you see Maps. The feature will start gradually?rolling out to U.S.-based Google users today.

Want more tech news, silly puns, or amusing links? You'll get plenty of all three if you keep up with Rosa Golijan, the writer of this post, by following her on?Twitter, subscribing to her?Facebook?posts, or circling her?on?Google+.

Still Smiling, Eduardo? Senators Schumer, Casey Want To Collect Your $67M In Facebook Taxes Anyway

saverin fAnother development in the ongoing story of how Eduardo Saverin has given up his U.S. citizenship to avoid paying $67 million in taxes related to Facebook's IPO: the U.S. government doesn't want him get away with it quite so fast. Today, Senators Charles Schumer and Bob Casey are expected to announce a plan they have to re-impose the taxes on Saverin, part of a bigger scheme to go after expatriates who give up citizenship in order to avoid taxes. On top of that, they want to make it official that people who avoid paying their taxes by renouncing citizenship will be permanently denied re-entry into the U.S.

Globally acclaimed Mexican novelist Carlos Fuentes dies

By msnbc.com news services

Alfredo Estrella / AFP - Getty Images

Mexican writer Carlos Fuentes takes part in a tribute to Mexican writer and anthropologist Fernando Benitez (1912-2000) at the Fine Arts Palace in Mexico City, on Dec. 18, 2011.

Novelist Carlos Fuentes, one of Latin America's most eloquent and widely read authors and a fierce critic of governments, has died after a literary career spanning more than five decades. He was 83.

Fuentes' best-known works include "The Death of Artemio Cruz,'' "The Crystal Frontier'' and "The Old Gringo," which was made into the 1989 movie by the same name starring Gregory Peck and Jane Fonda.

Local media said Fuentes died in a Mexico City hospital on Tuesday following heart problems.

Dividing his time chiefly between Mexico City and London, Fuentes dovetailed literature ? writing more than 30 books that have been translated into two dozen languages ? and social observation throughout his career.

Fuentes,?an "elegant public intellectual and grand man of letters," as the New York Times obituary?describes him?? helped spark the explosion of Latin American in the 1960s and 70s known as "el boom" along with Colombia's Gabriel Garc?a M?rquez, Mario Vargas Llosa of Peru and Argentine Julio Cortazar.

In the 1980s he was a frequent critic of U.S. intervention in Central America and lambasted the effects of U.S. immigration policy on Mexican migrant workers in his mid-1990s novel, "La Frontera de Cristal'' (The Crystal Frontier).

"They know they need migrant Mexican labor, without which their harvests, services and many aspects of life would go to ruin,'' Fuentes once said, calling U.S. policy a farce.

Fuentes also became one of the most open critics of Mexico's entrenched political system under the Institutional Revolutionary Party, which ruled Mexico for 71 years before it was ousted in 2000 elections.

Mexican President Felipe Calderon and other political and cultural leaders quickly paid tribute to Fuentes on Tuesday.

"I profoundly regret the death of our beloved and admired Carlos Fuentes, writer and universal Mexican,'' Calderon wrote on his Twitter account.

Fuentes' critical eye was at work from the start of his career. His first novel in 1958, "La region mas transparente'' (Where the Air is Clear), was not only a look at life in Mexico City, now ironically one of the most polluted in the world. It also examined how the Mexican Revolution of 1910-1917 had created a new and wealthy elite but did nothing for the impoverished and indigenous masses.

Born in Panama in 1928, Fuentes divided his early years among the United States, Chile and Argentina, following his father's diplomatic postings before going on to study law.

In an interview with the Academy of Achievement, Fuentes explained how his life growing up as the child of a diplomat pushed him in the direction of writing.

"As a little boy, I read a lot," he said. "That was solitary in a way, because I knew my friends wouldn't last more than two or three years, then another change, new friends. So I had to build my own inner world through reading, movies, radio at the time."

Video: Biden travels to swing states in support of Obama

>>> we are back with vice president joe biden going on the attack in a very personal way speaking to voters in the swing state of ohio just a couple of hours ago. the vice president hammered those he calls, quote, rich guys who talk down to low and middle income americans.

>> i resent when they talk about families like mine that i grew up in. i resent the fact they think we're talking about we're envy, job envy, wealth envy , that we don't dream. my mother and father believed that if my brother or sister wanted to be a millionaire, they could be a millionaire. my mother and father dreamed as much as any rich guy dreams. they don't get us. they don't get who we are.

>> let me bring in our political panel, jimmy williams and associate editor and columnist for the hill a.b. stoddard. this is what the president was referring to on the view, the passion that vice president biden , the connection, that he is able to bring. what's your take on those remarks in ohio ?

>> i think they're pretty risky, tamron. i understand what he is doing. he is trying to energize would-be supporters who would not vote for mitt romney anyway but may be disappointed with the president's first couple of years with some of his policies and the state of the economy and may not be really excited about this upcoming election and i know that he speaks effectively to those people and you could hear it in the crowd. it is very risky because so many persuadable voters that they're trying to win over in order to make it over the top and be reelected in the fall are turned off by this type of i don't know if you want to call it class warfare or this pop lichl. they are not so much resentful of rich people of a system they feel treats them unfairly, but i think going after rich people the way the vice president did today is actually a risk when thur trying to win over swing voters .

>> it is interesting. it worked for senator santorum when he talked about his background, his family, working in pennsylvania, his grandfather, and as well as newt gingrich when he won south carolina . i am intrigued by the fact you believe it is risky for vice president biden but sure worked for a decent period of time for newt gingrich . he may have blown it on other issues but along those lines it worked and kept rick santorum in a race that many people and he would admit the first week or month thought he would never survive. why would it be risky for one side and not the other?

>> i think those are two different cases. i don't think it worked for newt gingrich .

>> it worked in south carolina . go ahead.

>> he saw the republican party rally around mitt romney in defense of a free market system and start to criticize him openly including senator jim demitt and other influential leaders in the party. for rick santorum who refused to jump on mitt romney in those following days after this 30-minute bain video came out from the super pac that favored newt gingrich , rick santorum refused to actually jump on the gingrich bandwagon and also attack free market system and capitalism, so i think that what rick santorum is doing is saying i come from a humble background and you know where i have been and you know where i am going and i understand people like you and it didn't work for him ultimately. he is not the presumptive nominee and mitt romney is. vice president biden and president obama need to win over people who are skeptical of both parties and not republicans or democrats and mad at both parties and they need to many of them can be small business owners and who believe that starting a business is risky and sometimes people lose their jobs and they might understand that the bain capital story is actually -- there are exceptions to the stories but sometimes there is risk and reward and people lose their jobs and they might think attacking mitt romney that way and saying rich people don't understand us is a mistake.

>> a.b., going back to that point and correct me if i'm wrong, there were republicans including congressman ryan who felt that it had gotten so ugly that the bain capital line of attack was hurting mitt romney and they wanted it to stop for fear that it would exactly play out the way we're watching, that the democrats would rightfully go after mitt romney on this weakness. did that not happen?

>> i think there is a difference here, though. you can scare people with those -- with the bain capital ad that the obama team released this week. it is terrible to watch men say i worked for 28 or 30 years and my livelihood was destroyed and i lost my job and they took everything and left us debt ridden and bankrupt. it is awful. it is obviously a compelling argument against mitt romney because he was involved in private equity and it was not something that you invest time and energy in to create jobs. it is an effort to create wealth. it is not an effort to create jobs. that's a fair ground for attack. i think had vice president biden gets up and says they don't get us, those rich people , it is something that can be perceived by people who are not democrats, who are persuadable voters, yet to make up their mind about this election as an attack upon rich, successful people, and that is a risk for the democrats.

>> let me get you in here. do you see it as a risk you move by the vice president coming out and saying they don't get us and referring to as he did and a.b. points out rich people ?

>> oddly, i am going to agree with both of you. hear me out on this one. i think in states like wisconsin and minnesota and some of the midwestern and pennsylvania and labor states, i think the bieden message, the santorum message, the pop lis message, the fdr message rings well and people like it. i think in other states that are battle ground states southern states that are right to work states like north carolina , va virginia, and places like florida , i don't think it plays well and i agree with a.b. from that perspective. what matters here are independents and independent women ages 30 to 50. in certain states they can certainly relate to that but in many states they probably don't like the tone of it. i think it works and it all depends on where you're trying to do it.

>> you mentioned florida and not working there, jimmy. the miami herald , i have it here, part of the article, 815 jobs were lost while romney led bain to this company in miami , 850 jobs were lost, and with romney at the head of bain it has been well documented they say and also the tampa bay times talks about medical technology facility, that same company, dade bering, saddled with debt, wound up shutting down two medical facilities in miami , 850 jobs lost. that doesn't sound like a location or state to state problem. i don't care where you are, you lose your job, 850 jobs, that's a hot topic.

>> a.b. was right when she said private equity , there is an upside and a downside to it and what the obama campaign is doing and by the way they have the right to do it is pointing out the downside to it. florida , two parts to florida . there is the panhandle and there is the rest of the dag gone state. it is a very different place. the panhandle, the red neck rif era, ask joe scarborough , that's the south. they still fly con 23ed rat flags and the middle of the state used to be a farming area, a huge suburb now and southern florida , very, very different places. you're right from the perspective that when you -- when someone comes in, corporate raids, you lose your job, you have lost your job. you have lost your house. you now had to move and move in with family members and that is a bad, bad story to have to be told over and over again. by the way, the obama campaign will do that again and again and again all across the country.

>> to your point, a.b., let me bring you in the first points out, the bain story continues to chase romney as he is in south florida , miami , and then onto tampa. if it is risky business with joe biden and some of the language that you're not fond of that he used in ohio , is it risky business for mitt romney to -- if this narrative of the rich guy who doesn't care continues to chase him? is it risky for him to give the appearance that he is running from it and not facing it head on? have we heard strong enough language from mitt romney defending bain capital , his role, and how that would incorporate and what kind of president he would be for this country?

>> you're right. the team obama is attacking not private equity they say so much as the fact that mitt romney has used his years to describe himself as a job creator and they argue that's not how you create jobs. mitt romney is not offering an adequate response to this story. his campaign, the top of the week, when the obama ad came out said, well, he was gone by the time that happened. he had already left. that -- he is not going to defend private equity . he needs to actually define and you are right, tamron, what exactly he was doing, what the risk and reward system is for a businessman whether you're in a small business or a huge business, and that is the kind of thing he needs to defend if he wants to win the election and describe himself as a better steward for the economy than president obama .

>> all right, a.b. always a great pleasure having you both

After underwear plot, Saudi officials claim headway against AQAP

Saudi officials refused to discuss their involvement in disrupting the latest underwear bomb plot from Al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula (AQAP), but say they are making gains against the group.

Al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula (AQAP), based in Yemen, remains a major threat but drone strikes and Saudi counterterrorism efforts are making significant headway against the franchise, say Saudi interior ministry officials.

Speaking to a visiting group of US journalists in Riyadh, the officials underscored the importance of US-Saudi cooperation in fighting terrorism but refused to confirm or deny reports that Saudi intelligence was involved in foiling the latest underwear bomb plot by Al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula (AQAP).

?This information [about who was responsible] going out at this particular time ? doesn?t serve anyone,? said Lt. Col. Sultan Mohammed of the ministry?s counterterrorism department, who has been tracking Islamist militants since the late 1990s.

Since 9/11 and a wave of domestic terrorist attacks in the following years, the Saudi government has taken strong measures to shut down jihadis and their ideology in the country. They have arrested more than 11,000 suspected militants over the past decade, about half of whom were released while the rest are being tried in a series of cases now moving through Saudi courts. The Ministry of Interior has also instituted a broad program to prevent the spread of jihadi ideology, which includes everything from requiring licenses for religious sermons to the promotion of books and leaflets that counter militant ideology to a generously funded rehabilitation center originally started for ex-Guant?namo detainees.

Officials said today that the Saudi government had now largely ?destroyed? Al Qaeda as an organization in Saudi Arabia, wiped out public sympathy for the group, and said that drone strikes over the past year in Yemen have weakened the group there. But they remain very much aware of AQAP?s efforts to regroup in Yemen in order to launch attacks against not only the West but also the Saudi kingdom.

Formerly Al Qaeda had separate branches in Saudi Arabia and Yemen, but by early 2009 they had merged into one organization.
