In Sickness and in Health, A new Mama's Trek back to Life

I?m on a mission to get stronger, add more lean muscle and help as many people across the country as I can improve their own health and fitness everyday. For me, in order for this to happen, I?ve got to be physically and mentally fit. My body and my mind have to be in the right place in order for me to be the best wife, best mom, best family member, best friend, best fitness ?inspirator? and quite frankly the best person I can be.

It?s been quite a trek this past year with the overflowing joy of our new baby boy being born, now 10 months old. Our ?Stewart Colton? was a lifelong dream come true, everything we wanted and more. Along with his birth came post labor complications that left me with 4 months of little physical activity and then a surgery this past January that left me with 12 more weeks of a prescribed ?immobility sentence? aside from lifting my son (which, even then had to be negotiated).

There were some very tough days when I would just stare at the walls, hold my son and wonder if I was ever going to recover fully and be able to literally ?jump? back into life again. As trivial as it may seem given the breadth of the situation, one of my worst thoughts of all, that brings tears to my eyes right now, were the moments when I really thought I would never run again. For some of you out there, you might think that this would be great as you don?t like or ever ?want? to run, but you do it anyway or even not. For someone like me who has been running ?for the love of running? my whole life, this was pure devastation and a sense of the demise of my soul.

Time continued to march on, fate stepped in and my husband stepped up. He convinced me that I would get better. He gave me hope when I had no hope left. My husband, the cynic, the self described naysayer, stepped up to the plate and batted what I believe to be the greatest ?homerun? of his life. Because of him, because he was so resolute in his belief in me, I kept hope alive, stayed patient, gradually crawled, gradually walked faster and on a glorious day on March 8th, I ran. I posted on Facebook the next day ?Yesterday, for the first time, since the birth of my son in August, I got medical clearance to run. It was like the Doctor gave me my breath back, my solace and my wings. And to date, it was the best mile run of my life. It wasn?t for time. It wasn?t for a training log. It wasn?t in a race. It was for pure joy. It was for pure love. It was for being in a great moment stride after stride. The next time you run my friends, I wish you this joy, this love and this moment. Sometimes we don?t choose running, running chooses us.?

Oftentimes we get to where we are going because we have the help of those who love us most and the love and support of those who care. It?s a beautiful thing to be able to step back a few minutes in life to appreciate those moments and to truly say ?thank you? to those who help lift us up, especially when we we feel we can?t lift ourselves. I?m still not even sure my husband knows how grateful I feel for his doing this or that he was the very instrument that got me to where I am now, but I will ask him to read this post or perhaps I?ll read it aloud to him (as he tends to not read all the emails I send him;)

I have so many others to thank; my early ?mom group? who listened to my stories, my son who was and continues to be an extraordinarily good, happy, content baby, my ?bonus? daughter who always asked if I needed help or asked how I was feeling and actually ?waited? for me to answer, my mom who came back out to California from Georgia to help wait on me hand and foot and help us take care of Colton, my dad and brother who were always just a phone call away, my in-laws, my best friends and cousins and family who called, my neighbors that brought food and baby formula, letters & cards sent by loved ones, all who visited and brought gifts, food and encouragement, and my clients ? who waited patiently for my return and my 30-Day challengers who made me realize that now more than ever, I have an important message to share. I thank you all from the bottom and top of my heart.

I am FINALLY feeling great, getting stronger than I have ever been and ready to give back my lessons to those of you who need and want to find that strength, that determination and that belief that no matter what, YOU CAN DO ANYTHING YOU PUT YOUR MIND INTO DOING, and of course accept a little help along the way.

Who knows, I may soon be coming after you?if I haven?t already?

My best to you,

Angie

Verizon Galaxy S 3 in stores today, if you're not into that developer phone thing

Verizon Galaxy S III

Ah, the Verizon Galaxy S 3. Available in blue and white, the device comes in either a 16GB or 32GB model, priced at $199 or $249 depending on which size you prefer. If you are not sure this is the device for you, be sure to check out our reviews of the Galaxy S III, and then head into the store to play with one.

If a locked bootloader is not your thing, and you would rather the ability to freely mess around with the software, odds are that this isn't what you want and instead you will be waiting for the unlocked model to be available directly from Samsung

It?s the fourth instalment in the cult ?B-movie? alien shooting romp. Sadly, however, a European release has not yet been confirmed.

"Unfortunately I have no additional information that I can share about EDF4,? a D3 statement released to Eurogamer read. ?The game is being released by D3 Japan and they will be handling the launch of the title in Japan. If more information becomes available to me, I'll be sure to keep you posted."

The previous two releases in the series ? Earth Defense Force 2017 and Earth Defense Force: Insect Armageddon were both released in the UK.?

Film Society announces lineup for 2012 French Film Festival

Posted by Ken Korman on Wed, Jul 11, 2012 at 11:40 AM

It's another enticingly strong and varied lineup for this year's New Orleans French Film Festival, which happens August 10-15 at the Prytania Theatre courtesy of the New Orleans Film Society and Consulat g?n?ral de France ? La Nouvelle-Orl?ans.

Highlights include Farewell, My Queen, a lavish period piece focusing on Marie Antoinette in the days leading up to the French Revolution; Delicacy, a romantic comedy starring Audrey Tatou (Am?lie); A Burning Hot Summer, which features a score by John Cale of Velvet Underground fame; and musical drama Beloved, which stars Catherine Deneuve and her real-life daughter Chiara Mastroianni.

Rounding out the Festival are two classic films that put the whole experience in perspective. Stanley Donen's 1957 Funny Face stars Audrey Hepburn, Fred Astaire, and the music of George and Ira Gershwin. It's a American film that celebrates Paris, and it's widely regarded by as a pinnacle of the Hollywood musical. The 1945 Children of Paradise is the all-time classic of French cinema. This epic tale of 19th-century Parisian theater artists sometimes gets compared to Gone With the Wind, but honestly, the film has few equals. A newly restored print will get a 4K digital presentation at the Prytania, and we can hardly wait.

Tickets for each screening are $10 for Film Society members and $11 general admission. You can see the full schedule complete with plot summaries and links to trailers here.

Graphene heals itself, powers our dreams and nightmares

Graphene heals itself

Slowly, but surely graphene is pushing our technological hopes, dreams and, yes, nightmares towards reality. The stuff is capable of extending battery life, generating electricity, powering high-speed data connections and super computer-worthy CPUs. It's water proof, stretchy, bendy and apparently self healing. (This space reserved for T-1000 reference.) Researchers at the University of Manchester discovered that, if you put a hole in a sheet of graphene, it simply stitches itself back together. This is thanks to carbon's tendency to latch on to other atoms, including its own, which can make the futuristic material difficult to work with, but gives it this highly unique quality. Thankfully, we're no where near self-healing robots. But, the discovery could lead to a simple method for molding it into almost any shape. Once pierced, the form of the mend is determined by the type of molecules introduced -- pure carbon simply regrows the perfect honeycomb structure, while a few foreign atoms can lead to "defects." Of course, if they're intentional and predictable, defects merely become "features." For more check out the source link.

Selling Internet Video Marketing Services - Business Owners ...

Q. As the owner of an internet video marketing company, what is the most effective way for me to prospect and generate sales with little or no budget? Asked on LinkedIn by Jonathan Franco.

A. Selling ?internet video marketing services? cries out for internet video marketing!
At the same time, 80% of selling is just showing up. You?ve got to get your face out there. In the end, people buy you.

The people I know in your business go to meetings of business organizations and make presentations on how to do video marketing affordably. The venue must have wi-fi and a digital projector, so that you can demonstrate some before-and-after efforts. Select a guinea pig and do a two-minute video for them right on the spot. You want people to say, ?That?s not so scary! I could do that!? and ?I like this guy. I want to hire him to help me.?
Your approach is to show ?em how to do it for themselves, so that they will hire you to do it for ?em.

No budget? Then you have a one-man bootstrap operation?at least initially. You have to substitute your time for money. But you will need to invest in a quality website, where you can embed your videos, because that?s your portfolio.

It?s hard for me to see you attracting investors so you can hire a sales force. Don?t waste your time even trying. Get out there and sell yourself!

Remote Desktop Apps for iPad That You Need to Know

July06 LogMeIn foriOS Remote Desktop Apps for iPad That You Need to Know

Source: LogMeIn Ignition Pro for iPad/ LogMeIn

Although it is yet to be dubbed as a laptop or desktop killer, Apple?s iPad has enabled users to control their PC from anywhere?provided that there is a stable Internet connection. In fact, dozens of remote desktop applications can be found at the App Store. Some of them are listed below.

LogMeIn Ignition

A lot of PC owners love LogMeIn Ignition because it has proven to be fast and efficient. It offers a free software host that, when installed, enables a user to control his or her computer anytime, anywhere. There is also the LogMeIn Pro service that costs $70 per year. This feature adds remote printing, file sharing, screen sharing, and other premium features.

It also offers failed login notifications, which will immediately send an email alert when someone tries to connect with the user?s remote PC and failed. The message will include the IP address of the machine that was used for the connection.

Citrix GoToMyPC

GoToMyPC is the pioneer in consumer-friendly remote desktop access. It offers a wide array of services from basic to enterprise level. For as low as $99 a year, GoToMyPC for iPad supports multi-touch features such as single and double tap, pinch-to-zoom, dragging, and scrolling. The application also features advanced security and administrator features.

Splashtop Remote Desktop

For $5, Splashtop Remote Desktop offers VNC and Google Internet Discovery. Through its very simple interface, the application resizes the desktop of the host machine to fit the iPad?s screen. It fills the entire view of the tablet, leaving just one side of the device for control panel. The control panel has a little keyboard button that, when tapped, will bring up the onscreen keyboard.

Wyse PocketCloud Pro

The Wyse PocketCloud Pro is a $15-worth of business-grade remote desktop app that is packed with versatile connectivity options. However, it has minor rendering issues, which makes it run slower than some of the known remote desktop access applications for iPad. Nevertheless, it makes establishing a remote connection easier. It also supports automatic discovery through Gmail accounts, VNC, Microsoft?s RDP7 protocol, and VMware Viewer. Once a user downloaded the software, he or she can establish a connection to PC or Mac in less than a minute.

?

Although iCloud will be arriving to Apple devices once iOS 6 has been released, not every iPad owner has an iCloud-powered desktop at home. Therefore, it would be a good thing if users will equip their iPad with a remote desktop access application.

Cuba scrambles to fight rare cholera outbreak

HAVANA (AP) ? Authorities in eastern Cuba are in full prevention mode to contain a rare cholera outbreak amid fears that it may have spread to the capital, distributing chlorine and water purification drops and quarantining hospital patients with diarrhea until they are checked for the disease.

In the eastern city of Manzanillo, in Granma province, cars crawl through the streets with loudspeakers reminding people of the importance of good hygiene, and the sale of oysters at private kiosks has been suspended, according to several residents interviewed by The Associated Press. But there has been no travel quarantine on the city, and the streets are calm even if some people are jittery.

"I haven't seen any panic or anything like that," David Chavez, a 40-year-old computer worker, said by phone from Manzanillo, 430 miles (700 kilometers) east of Havana. "But what's certain is that there are some who are scared. And when somebody gets diarrhea, they immediately go to the hospital."

The precautions follow last week's announcement of three deaths and 53 diagnosed cases of the waterborne disease, which hadn't been seen in Cuba for many years. Cholera can kill quickly through dehydration but is easily treatable if caught in time. A Health Ministry bulletin said the outbreak was under control.

The government has not responded to requests for comment on reports that several cases have been found in Havana, nor has it followed up last week's announcement with more information, fueling rumors and contradictory stories.

Residents of the capital's El Cerro neighborhood told the AP that a father and daughter had been diagnosed with cholera and were being treated at a local hospital, but it was not clear where they had contracted the disease. The residents spoke on condition of anonymity for fear they would get into trouble for talking to international journalists.

The BBC reported over the weekend that at least one case of cholera had been detected in Havana, without naming its sources. The Miami Herald, quoting an apparent dissident who lives in Granma province, said more than 1,000 people had been sickened. And exile blogs such as Cafe Fuerte have reported additional deaths, citing residents and unnamed officials.

U.S. Rep. Ileana Ros-Lehtinen, a staunch anti-Castro congresswoman from Florida, accused the Cuban government of withholding information to avoid scaring away tourists.

Amid the uncertainty, there were also reports that airports in southeastern Mexico had issued a medical alert and were screening passengers from Cuba. But Mexican officials denied that.

"There has not been even a single passenger suspected" of carrying cholera, said Luis Vazquez, spokesman for the Yucatan state health agency. "Cuba is a country with a very good epidemiological system. They don't even let (sick) passengers leave."

Cuba has a well-organized civil defense system capable of rapidly mobilizing government agencies and citizens' groups, as it does for tropical storms and hurricanes. Brigades of workers routinely scrutinize every dwelling and other property to eliminate standing water where mosquitos bearing another tropical disease, dengue, could breed.

The country also has battalions of well-trained doctors and nurses, many of whom played a key role in fighting a much deadlier cholera outbreak in nearby Haiti after that country's devastating earthquake.

The Manzanillo outbreak happened in poor outlying neighborhoods that rely on wells for their water. Cuba's Health Ministry said in its announcement last week that it was collecting samples from the wells, sealing off tainted water supplies and disinfecting hydraulic systems.

Doctors were going door to door to look for people running a fever and to advise residents about preventive measures such as using chlorine drops to disinfect drinking water.

Hotels in Manzanillo were accepting guests as usual, but have ramped up hygienic measures. At the Guacanayabo Hotel everyone was washing their hands and feet in buckets with chlorinated water and the pool was being treated daily.

"There are meetings every day at noon to go over how everything's going, and so far there are no problems here," hotel worker Luleima Ortiz said by phone.

Some people in Havana were also taking precautions.

One man, a barber, said he was washing his hands more often, avoiding touching his mouth at work and boiling his drinking water.

Another, a street vendor, got rid of the cardboard box he had used to hold his sweet pastries, replacing it with a plastic one that's easier to keep clean and does a better job keeping the flies away.

"I, as a vendor, must protect and take care of others," Alfredo Bruceta said.

Associated Press journalists Franklin Reyes and Peter Orsi in Havana, and E. Eduardo Castillo in Mexico City, contributed to this report.

HBT: Crawford admits he might need surgery

Carl Crawford says his groin strain that has delayed his comeback slightly is no big deal. He gets it every year. His elbow, however, is kind of a mess, and Crawford says that he?s eventually going to need Tommy John surgery on it. Here?s Crawford on the State of The Ligament:

?Probably at some point, because it?s one of those deals. It is what it is,? Crawford said. ?So probably at some point it?s going to go out on me.?

Asked if he had thought about having surgery before the elbow goes out, Crawford replied:

?Thought about it but at this point if I can play, I think they want me out on the field. So I?m just trying to do everything I can to get back on the field.?

Rehab time for a position player getting TJ surgery is much shorter than a pitcher because, you know, no curveballs. But Crawford admits that he should try to take it easier on throws from the outfield, going for the cutoff man more often. ?He says, however, that it?s likely that he won?t do that because in the heat of the moment you just do what you?re trained to do, and sometimes that means firing for home.

He says he?s close to coming back. And I suppose that means base runners are close to salivating at the thought of running on Crawford?s questionable arm.

Australian mining magnate Rinehart makes media push

SYDNEY (Reuters) - When Australian mining mogul Gina Rinehart, one of the world's richest women, flew to Cambodia to meet former trafficked children whose education she was financing, she was showing a little known side of her character.

The "Pilbara Princess" is one of Australia's most written about personalities for her ruthless business dealings, a fortune from family mining interests and an endless string of lawsuits, including against her own children, to protect those riches.

She has not been feted for her softer side or public largesse. But during that Cambodia trip in 2010, Rinehart also took girls from an orphanage to the hairdresser and bought clothes, toiletries and refrigerators for them, moving the home's manager to tears.

It would have made for a perfect feel-good story, except that the 58-year-old Rinehart, the only child of one of Australia's legendary frontier miners, refused to talk about it, save in an article she wrote herself for an inflight magazine.

Her disdain for the mainstream media has never been hidden, but Rinehart is now building up a stake in that very industry, heightening concerns about a conflux of vested interests and media power.

In recent months, she has taken a 10 percent stake in free-to-air TV operator Ten Network Holdings and joined the board alongside publishing scions Lachlan Murdoch and James Packer.

She is also engaged in a high-profile war with Fairfax Media for board representation after becoming the top shareholder of Australia's largest newspaper group.

"She's part of a pattern of the mining industry asserting itself in very political ways," says David McKnight, an associate professor in Journalism and Media at the University of New South Wales.

"She's idiosyncratic and she has a personal agenda but she's also part of a really fundamental structural change in the Australian economy."

STAGGERING WEALTH

Rinehart's interest in media has coincided with an explosion of media interest in her, driven by her huge wealth.

A string of deals and booming commodity prices have helped her convert a modest inherited fortune into a staggering sum. Forbes in February estimated her to be worth $18 billion, making her the richest woman in Asia. Australia's BRW magazine subsequently named her the richest woman in the world, worth an estimated $29 billion. Rinehart herself claims to have increased her inheritance by 40,000 percent.

Helping fuel public fascination, Rinehart is fighting an acrimonious legal battle with three of her four children, who are trying to remove her as trustee of a multi-billion-dollar family trust.

Due back in court this week, Rinehart has tried unsuccessfully to have the hearings held behind closed doors and has issued subpoenas against The West Australian newspaper, seeking access to confidential sources following its reporting of the battle.

Despite her sometimes difficult relationship with the press, Rinehart has declared herself to be a "white knight" for Fairfax, the publisher of the Sydney Morning Herald and Australian Financial Review. She has issued an ultimatum to its chairman to improve the struggling company's performance or resign, but questions about her goals beyond that remain unanswered.

Rinehart, who seldom gives interviews, declined to comment for this article.

Many point to her father Lang Hancock's establishment of two newspapers, now defunct, in the 1960s and 1970s to espouse his right-wing ideas as a signal post for his daughter's intentions.

"I think it is all related and harks back to her father's views that the media is a useful vessel to get messages across and sway political policy," said Adele Ferguson, who spent 18 months researching Rinehart for a recently released unauthorized biography.

Lang Hancock is an enormous figure in Australia's mining history. Legend has it that he discovered the world's largest deposit of iron ore in Pilbara, Western Australia while flying low in a rocky gorge when piloting a light plane through a storm in the early 1950s.

He spent years lobbying the then government to remove a ban on exporting ore and made a fortune when they did, selling valuable tenements and partnering with some of the biggest mining names in the world.

A polarizing figure, Hancock proposed using small nuclear bombs to help mine the Outback, advocated secession for Western Australia and had business dealings with the brutal Romanian dictator Nicolae Ceausescu. His disparaging comments on the unemployed and Aborigines outraged liberals.

"FELLA"

Rinehart appears to have inherited both the business sense and the bullish, take-no-prisoners characteristics of the man who called his only child "fella" as he took her on business meetings from the age of 13.

Rinehart was educated in Perth but has spent much of her life in the Pilbara, a 500,000-square-kilometre, or 190,000-square-mile stretch of ancient red earth, searing heat and still the single largest source of iron ore in the world.

Since her father's death in 1992 at the age of 82, Rinehart as executive chairman of Hancock Prospecting Pty Ltd, has transformed her father's discovery into a company of global scale.

Her Hope Downs joint venture with iron ore giant Rio Tinto generates huge cash flows and the $10 billion Roy Hill iron ore project, whose investors include Korean and Japanese companies, promises to be another big money-spinner.

A passionate nationalist and vocal climate change skeptic, Rinehart's opposition to taxes and calls for miners to be allowed exemptions from laws prohibiting the use of foreign labor have put her on a collision course with government and unions.

"I fear Australia's extraordinary success has never been in more jeopardy than right now because of the rising power of vested interests," Australian Treasurer Wayne Swan wrote in an opinion piece mentioning Rinehart and other mining magnates by name. "This poison has infected our politics and is seeping into our economy."

Rinehart's rising profile has put her back in the spotlight 20 years after a very public legal battle with her father's widow Rose Porteous, a Filipina housekeeper who married Hancock after Rinehart's mother died.

The decade-long court cases revealed salacious family details, references to black magic, hitmen and poison, and intimate moments between Hancock and Porteous, before the two women settled out of court without making details of the settlement public.

KEEN LITIGANT

Since then, Rinehart has regularly been in court, battling her father's former business partner and mining giant BHP Billiton among others, earning her a reputation as a keen litigant.

But it is details of the latest battles with her children that have generated the most headlines.

Just days before the family trust was due to vest, Rinehart changed the vesting date to 2068 when her four children will be in their 80s and 90s.

The children are the offspring of Rinehart's first husband Greg Milton, who became a taxi driver after their divorce, and her second husband Frank Rinehart, who had moved to Australia after pleading guilty in the United States to criminal tax fraud. Frank Rinehart died of a heart attack in 1990.

Family e-mails made public as part of the trust case showed Gina Rinehart describing the elder trio of children of being lazy and spoilt, and warning that their security would be at risk if they persisted with the action. Typed missives often ended with "Regards Mother. Dictated not read."

Rinehart's criticisms rankle with John Hancock, 36, her eldest child and only son, who was dumped from the Hancock Prospecting board by his mother less than eighteen months after being appointed in 1997.

Hancock, who recently released a statement telling kidnappers not to bother with him as his mother would pay no ransom, now has a half-share in a start-up building company which hopes to revolutionize the industry with a product that removes the need for load-bearing concrete columns.

"I've got an MBA, I'm managing a company that is building houses in Western Australia and possibly around the world," Hancock told Reuters.

"I'm not really quite sure what she means via her repeated broadcasts about non-working or unable to administer something as simple as a trust," he adds. "What would satisfy her, I don't know, I don't have mining tenements because she has got them all in the family company."

Hancock's ability to talk about his mother, however, is limited by a series of gagging orders.

"I'm not allowed to disparage her; indeed my public comments tend to highlight her intelligence, but it's open slather (season) in disparaging the now adult children."

London-based Ginia Rinehart has sided with her mother in the dispute and has been rewarded as the heir apparent, an honor that has been passed from one to the other sibling over the years.

An insight into Rinehart's thinking came in a rare interview shortly after a brush with death following routine surgery in 2008.

"We all know far too many stories where the third generation just destroys everything the first two have built up and I certainly hope my family are different, because I've worked too hard and my father has worked too hard for it to be given away," she said.

Regardless of the outcome of her battle with Fairfax -- and with her children -- one thing seems certain.

"Rinehart is one of the most fascinating characters in Australia and is fast becoming an unstoppable force in business, the media and politics," says Ferguson, her unauthorized biographer. "We haven't seen anything yet. Australia is about to see a lot more of Gina."
