College Hockey Thread 2011-12

With RIT opening their season against Niagara tonight (in HD on TWSC for those of you in the Buffalo/Rochester area), and with all the different college rooting interests we have here, figured a thread to encompass all the (non-Sabre) college hockey talk would be a good thing.

This is actually Niagara's 2nd game, having gone to Michigan and losing 5-0 to start the season. Elsewhere, UMD started the defense of their national title with a 4-3 win over #1 Notre Dame, while BC thumped Michigan State 5-2, and Northeastern tied UMass 3-3. BU, Canisius, and Cornell have yet to start their respective seasons.

Any other teams people follow around here?

UConn Huskies! They're not usually good, but its one of my alma maters and they even have a player from my home town Elma, NY. Also another player from Williamsville.

They played one of Atlantic Hockey's closer games last night - a 2-1 loss to Bowling Green. Atlantic Hockey's started a brutal 0-9-0 out of the conference, which includes a truly brutal 9-0 Minnesota win over Sacred Heart, AIC blowing a 3-0 1st period lead vs. Michigan Tech, and a truly disappointing 3-1 loss by Robert Morris to Colgate.

EDIT: I meant to add that I think UConn's on the way up right now - they were a surprise semi-finalist last year in the AH playoffs, and can take advantage of a slightly less competitive Eastern pod again this season.

They're coming up to the Ritter this year - I look forward to going to that one. Love seeing the ECAC teams start to make the return trips up to Rochester - bigger schools are starting to come up for the Brick City Homecoming game at the Blue Cross too - Penn State next season and Michigan the year after.

I'll be watching the Icebreaker first place game between UND and BC tonight, so I'll have to catch RIT-Niagara on-demand later.

Grimaldi should be returning tonight for UND and they're always a fun team to watch.

I root for RIT by homer default.

Watching right now. 0-0 midway through the game.

Only guy who looks real sharp for RIT is Madalora (their all-american goalie). I do like the look of Garbowsky though.

Can't wait for the Knights to visit Union College this year, it's been a blast the past two times.

Big Red (Cornell) fan here. (sad to admit that I'm old enough to have watched Nieuwendyk play my freshman year) Pretty disappointing season last year after the previous 2. Not sure how this season will be yet. Any Lynah Faithful here?

They're my 2nd team after RIT - I went to Ithaca College for 2 years (and this was before RIT had a D1 team so they were #1 for awhile) so since IC had no hockey team to speak of Cornell was IC's adopted hockey interest.

Anyway, results from last weekend....the RIT-Niagara game did indeed end in a 0-0 tie: the first one in RIT varsity hockey's 47 year history (any level). UConn managed to scrape out the first non-conference point for Atlantic Hockey, tying Bowling Green in the 2nd game of their set 4-4.

Clarkson finished 0-1-1 against the Alaska schools in Alaska, tying Anchorage 4-4 then losing to Alaska 3-1 on Saturday. While conference mates Union pounded Army 8-1

BU got their Hockey East schedule off to a rousing start with a 5-0 win over New Hampshire, while Northeastern lost in Maine 6-3.

Interesting to see so much conference play start already in opening weekend (Atlantic Hockey and Hockey East both with conference games in the books). Next weekend only the ECAC (thanks to the rules governing Ivy schools) doesn't have scheduled conference games.

Got one here! First year of being "officially" part of the Lynah Faithful...although I've been buying tickets for at least half the home games the past 2 years and moving into Section B. Finally decided to make the plunge and got season tix in B.

Clarkson alum here, not a huge fan as they play a cripplingly boring style of hockey and I tend to think of the ECAC as a conference full of grinders.

Now why would anyone want to screw my totally amazing and awesome Terriers?

And I'm officially starting my "Sabres should sign Chris Connolly" campaign. I want to see that guy in a Sabres uniform badly...he's gonna be a good one.

Cornell hockey games are about the nuttiest sporting events I've ever been to. Here are some PG examples, but I remember MUCH worse stuff

http://www.onfrozenblog.com/2008/11/...ing-fish.html:

"Cornell?s biggest rivalry used to be with Boston University, and was especially strong back when Cornell and BU were both in the ECAC. The Cornell fans still cheer ?Screw BU, (opponent) too!? at any game, no matter who?s playing. However, after BU left the league, all the focus was directed to Harvard. The fact that most of the students attending the game are primarily focused on academics is evident and reflected in the cheers ? chants like ?Safety school? or ?Grade inflation? probably aren?t heard in many other arenas and rarely used in reference to Harvard ? but with both teams being consistently in competition for the league championship and shots at the NCAA title, the bitterness easily extends over into the fans.

One of the key elements of the game, whenever it?s held at Cornell, is the throwing of fish onto the ice. Back in 1973, a Harvard fan threw a dead chicken onto the ice at the Cornell goalie, supposedly to make fun of Cornell?s agricultural college. When the game was held at Cornell later that year, Cornell fans started throwing fish onto the ice to make fun of the fishing industry in Boston. Harvard?s response was to tie a live chicken to the Cornell goal the following year, but officials there have prevented them from doing so ever since. On the other hand, Cornell fans at Lynah rink continue to throw fish onto the ice, despite security patdowns (that seriously do pat you down in every uncomfortable spot). Because any fan caught throwing fish can be ejected and have their season tickets taken away, some fans try to prevent fish smell on their hands by throwing cans of tuna, cans of sardines, or packages of Swedish fish.

There are a number of Cornell traditions that take place at all the games. First and foremost is to bring a newspaper. When the opposing team?s line-up is announced, every fan pulls out their paper and starts waving it in front of themselves, chanting ?boring? over and over. Finally, all the newspapers are thrown onto the ice. Other cheers include waving at any opposing player heading to the penalty box, and once he steps in, to shout ?See ya, a&&hole, you goon.? Halfway through the third period, the tubas in the band walk all the way around the arena, head down the aisle behind the opposing team?s bench, and lead a cheer that goes, ?Hey (opponent), Dieeeeee, Drop dead, Go home!?
