European tech comm professionals will be descending on the UK next month for TCUK12, the largest UK event for technical communicators. Karen Mardahl (pictured), the keynote speaker on the Accessibility and Usability stream, gives a preview of what?s in store at this year?s conference?
The world is coming to Newcastle, UK, 2-4 October for the ISTC?s 2012 Technical Communication UK Conference. Three keynotes, six pre-conference workshops, three tracks and 30 sessions covering the length and breadth of tech comm await.
Leah Guren, tech comm consultant and teacher, is the conference keynote speaker. She has a very fishy tale to kick off the main conference, sharing six major life lessons that you can learn from watching fish: ?Take the plunge and discover how fish can help you revitalise your technical communication career!?
I?ll be the keynote speaker for the specialist track, arguing that adaptability is the true key to accessibility and usability. [Karen has previously guest-blogged for Firehead on content strategy and accessibility and we held a joint TCUK session on content strategy at last year?s event ? Ed.]
Finally, Scott Abel, aka The Content Wrangler, needs little introduction to the technical communication community. In addition to his keynote on structured content, he has a workshop lined up to help attendees understand eBooks.
Here is the full TCUK12 programme with details of pre-conference workshops and conference sessions.
This year?s specialist track covers two major areas of a good content strategy: accessibility and usability. Attendees should find plenty of inspiration for developing their strength in this area.
As for the rest of the conference programme, this year?s talks have plenty to offer the tech comm professional, from how to sell yourself as a technical author to reshaping content for mobile devices to what the future of technical communication might look like.
I look forward to meeting you at TCUK12 if you?re attending. There are still some places available if you haven?t booked yet. But if you?re stuck in the Antarctic and can?t make it to sunny Newcastle, then you can still keep up with conference news by following the official Twitter account @tcuk_conf and the #TCUK12 hashtag or by tracking the fun on Lanyrd.
