In life coaching we often encounter a tension between two ways of improving your life: taking action versus changing your attitude and appreciating what you have.
And of course there?s no one answer. As a life coach, every session with a client is absolutely unique and every situation has its own solution.
All that being said, it?s easy for those of us that are in productivity/accomplishment driven cultures to hyper-focus on action as our mode for changing our lives.
But I think it?s fundamentally important for us to cultivate our ability to appreciate what we have.
Think of it as an ?attitude of appreciation? ? the ability to be grateful, to be mindful and present throughout the day, and to savor the little things. With an attitude of appreciation, we build a powerful foundation from which we can really appreciate the good that comes when we do take action.
In other words, when we spend all of our mental energy on taking action, we can completely miss out on experiencing the good things we create for ourselves.
Once you learn to shift your perspective and really savor the good in life, then you tap into a profound personal power that supports long-lasting, authentic happiness and well-being.
Still, sometimes there?s no substitute for seeing a problem and taking action. If there?s something you can do to improve the quality of your life, do it. But don?t forget to savor the results!
Here?s one easy life coaching exercise to help you do it:
Every evening for two weeks, write down one action you took that made your life better ? and the positive outcome you achieved. It doesn?t matter how big or small the contract, just capture something. Then answer these questions:
- Why were you able to take this action? What helped you?
- Why are the positive results so significant?
- How do you feel about the results?
- How would you feel if you had even more of this in your life?
What do you think? What?s one thing in your life you could appreciate more? What would it mean if you did that?
