Online Dating Dangers

Not everyone you meet online is genuine

With a New Year comes new resolutions, and for you this could very well mean getting yourself back on the dating scene. For those who choose online dating as their preferred method of meeting new people, this is an exciting opportunity to meet new people in the comfort of your own surroundings, with little other than the artistic talent of your dating profile between you and your future life partner. Whatever your intentions may be, it is important to remember that not everyone who goes on dating sites are genuine and you must always interact with people online with the same sense of caution as you would when meeting a stranger in a public place (such as a bar, cafe, event etc).

With the launch and subsequent success of DateScreen, it has become apparent that the private security industry now has a new niche area ? online investigations. As more people go about their daily lives with a percentage of it spent online, it is only natural that there has been a significant trend in private detectives undertaking cases which have been initiated as a result of online interactions.

DateScreen investigators have been involved in a range of diverse online dating cases which include, but are not limited to:

- A significant rise in romance scammers

- Children posing as adults on dating sites with the intention of receiving free gifts and money from their unsuspecting dates

- International fraudsters creating a new identity and finding new victims online

- Knowingly infected individuals spreading STI?s via the use of online dating sites

- Bankrupted individuals posing as high flying, successful businessmen/woman

- Married men and woman posing as single individuals online

Added to these examples, there are daily reports in the newspaper (on a global scale) of individuals who have initially met via online, meeting for the first time and becoming victims of staged robberies, sexual assaults and attempted murder.

It is so important that if you are dating online, always take precaution when disclosing any of your personal information such as your full name, date of birth, names and ages of your children, and your contact details. Added to this NEVER send money to anyone you have met under these conditions (a strong indication of a romance scammer), nor disclose your passwords and/or provide copies of your identity documents (such as passport, drivers licence, bank accounts) etc. This is, unfortunately, more common than you would think ? or wish to believe.

If you do decide to meet the person you have met online in real life, make sure to follow these simple guidelines to help keep yourself from harms way:

  • Never arrange to be picked up at your house.
  • Arrange your own return transport, separate from your Date.
  • Inform someone of where you?re going and when they should expect you back.
  • Keep your phone with you and on wherever you go in case of an emergency.
  • Meet somewhere public that has many people and try to stay there.
  • Be cautious when you drink.
  • Do not assume that the person you?re with is safe or reliable.
  • Avoid the perception of any obligation by going ?dutch? on the bill.
  • Until you absolutely trust them, use a hotel if you intend on engaging in a sexual relationship with them.
  • ALWAYS use a condom.
  • Remain alert until the date is over and you?re home safely.

Stay safe..and happy Dating!
