professional answer please from someone in the field of Eating ...

Question by : professional answer please from someone in the field of Eating Disorders!?
I posted this question in diet in fitness and everyone said she was anorexic? are they right?

If you knew someone that consumed 359 calories in one day, and they refused to ever go over 400 calories a day, would you consider them to be Anorexic? This friend has already burned 253 calories today? And plans to burn more. I only know this because I looked at her online calorie journal? She says some days she will eat under 300 calories and other days she will eat under 400. I might add that most of her calorie intake is from drinks like Coffee and so fourth? She says it?s her way of a good diet? Is she right? Could 400 calories a day be healthy?

She is currently 5?3 and weighs 105 pounds?. but is aiming to loose at least 8 more pounds

I have often been told Anorexia is a mental illness? that is why I am posting this question here? I would like to know what some of the ?mental? signs are that anorexics show? My friend doesn?t act like she is mental? I mean since the whole diet thing started she has gotten somewhat more distant? She is more quite and always seems like she is in another world! but I don?t think that makes her mental? But other people keep asking whats wrong with her since she is my best friend?I would like answers from professionals in the field of eating disorders, or from people who have witnessed it and know the signs? Thank you

Your friend?s diet is definitely NOT healthy. You need at least 1200 calories a day (of healthy foods) just for your organs to function properly.

Since her BMI is 18.6, she would not be considered anorexic (diagnoses-wise), instead ?ED-NOS? (eating disorder not otherwise specified). Either way, she definitely has a problem, and I strongly urge you to encourage her to tell a responsible adult. If she refuses, you should go to someone yourself to seek the help she needs. She might be mad at first, but if you truly care for her, it is so much better than losing her, or waiting until the illness permanently injures her.

Eating disorders are mainly about control, and psychological symptoms include:

* Depression and irritability
* Mood swings
* Difficulty concentrating and memory loss
* Ignoring feelings of hunger
* Concern about being overweight
* Denial of being underweight
* Distorted body image
* Low-self-esteem
* Fear of weight gain and being too fat
* Preoccupation with food and calorie intake
* Preoccupation with tidiness
* Obsessing about exercising
* Anxiety when eating in front of other people
* Feeling that happiness is undeserved
* Constantly striving for perfection
* Strong urge to be in control

You may confront her about her problem, but do not try to ?convince? or force her to eat, as it is not that simple. Seek professional help for her immediately. You are a good friend for worrying about her. It?s a long road to recovery, but keep on supporting her!
